Casale Villa Rainò

Villa Rainò: a place steeped in history and legends

Numerous legends have been handed down over time about the villa. It is said, for example, that bandits used to hide in the area, taking advantage of underground tunnels that led from the villa to safer places, far from the town center.

Other stories speak of lavish parties organized in honor of illustrious guests: it is said there was a reception for the Tsar's visit to the Baron, or a lunch with Mussolini, held in the shade of the round grove of ancient trees.

Amidst dances, intrigues, and mysteries, it is not always easy to distinguish truth from myth. Yet, it is precisely through these tales—real or the product of collective imagination—that entire generations have helped to build the authentic and fascinating identity of Villa Rainò.

For a long time, Villa Rainò was the residence of the noble Li Destri family.

Of Spanish origin, the Li Destri family played a prominent role in Sicily at the time. During the revolutionary uprisings against the Bourbons, an insurrectional committee was formed representing various localities of the island: for Gangi, Baron Salvatore Li Destri of Rainò was a member.

In 1860, in recognition of his Garibaldian merits, the Italian government awarded Baron Salvatore the silver medal. However, it was his son Antonio who lived in the villa for a longer time. After studying in Catania, Baron Antonio returned to Gangi where he began a brilliant career as a notary.

It is precisely the discovery of a letter addressed to Baron Antonio Li Destri at "Villa Rainò" that today gives the structure its name.
